Adam Broomberg, born in South Africa in 1970, and Oliver Chanarin, born in England in 1971, have been collaborating for over a decade. Together they have produced six books which in different ways examine the language of documentary photography. Their first three books were published by Gigi, starting with ‘Trust’, with his first independent imprint Westzone, and with Trolley Books they later published Ghetto (2003), from where this image of Star City in Russia from, and Mr Mkhize’s Portrait and other stories of the New South Africa. (2004). Their work is represented in major public and private collections, whilst Broomberg and Chanarin teach at the School of Visual Arts in New York and are Visiting Fellows at the University of the Arts London. The artists are the recipients of numerous awards, including the Vic Odden Award from the Royal Photographic Society and are trustees of the Photographers’ Gallery and Photoworks in the UK. They currently live and work in London.
