Michael Joo lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. He received an MFA from the Yale School of Art, Yale University, New Haven, in 1991. In 2006, Joo was awarded the grand prize of the 6th Gwangju Biennale, South Korea, along with artist Song Dong. He is a recipient of the United States Artists Fellowship (2006) as well as the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship (1999.) Joo’s work is in numerous public and private collections, including the Guggenheim Museum, New York; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; Denver Art Museum; Israel Museum, Jerusalem; UCLA Hammer Museum; Moderna Museet, Stockholm; and the Samsung Foundation for Culture, Seoul.
